“We hold the future in our hands. We strive against the darkness. We carry the hopes of all.”
In the darkness, with firelight dancing over thirty young people standing in a line, these words rang out in one voice, one single and strong anthem. These were the words of the their faith.
Era Rae believed in these words. She believed in the Restored Society and Colony 41. Even more so now that she was about to graduate into the Eccoliculum, the next level of her Academy education, on course to become an Enforcer.
She would be one of the people responsible for holding society together. Responsible for making sure the laws and the ideals of the Restored Society weren’t being violated. After the chaos of the Event, the Enforcers were what kept the world safe for the good people. That was her goal.
But in one moment everything changed. Her good friend was injured and whisked away by two Enforcers and from that moment Era's life began to crumble. Nothing was ever the same again. Everything that she had believed to be true and held dear to her heart were found to be illusions that were well and truly shattered.
In this six part series follow Era's journey of self discovery and her fight against the odds as everything she believed in reveals itself to be a lie, including herself.

The Academy - Colony 41 is a book that pulls some surprises in the storyline. At 86 pages, I think it is way overpriced normally, especially for its length, but is an enjoyable read for an hour or so if you can pick it up on a free offer like I did.The Colony system is faintly reminiscent of the WOOL silos at least in having numbered colonies, though in this case, the different colonies know about one another and even have trade and supply missions between each other. They are the remnant of the Restored Society, supposedly what is left of humanity after a nuclear war that few even remember any more.
Era is the main character, and overall, I must say that character development is not one of the strong points of this story. However, there is more exposition later on, and it makes sense why more development was not done in the beginning. The book opens at a graduation ceremony for Era's training class of future Enforcers, the law enforcement officers of the Colony system. Beyond that, I will not delve further into the story, because much of anything said would be a spoiler. Suffice it to say that because of the incremental exposition of the storyline, most people will understand what is coming before the end, even with the twists involved.
This is definitely a YA book at most, and I would say is best aimed at the 12-18 group best. The writing does come off as somewhat simplistic, and the action tends to be explained more than once, in a teen book style.
I can see why some might rate the book lower, since it is short and written more for teens than adults. However, for the audience that I think would appreciate the story most, I think it is at least a worthy effort, a low 4-star book.

The Academy Colony 41 Book 1 eBook SJ Taylor Reviews
This book was atrocious. It was if a middle schooler jotted all these unfinished ideas down and wondered what if I publish it.
Great read
Very interesting book. It made me want to read the sequel.
