Girls are a risk college freshman Ainsley Carmichael can't take. Her powerful political family sees her as the Chosen One who will someday be president. Upholding a carefully crafted veneer is second nature until the first day of class when Maya's mysterious gray eyes hold her in thrall.

Ainsley may be out publicly regarding her sexual orientation, but she lives under the shadow of the Carmichael's ancient but shrewd matriarch in this contemporary lesbian romance. The girls pair up for a history project, and it soon becomes clear Maya is hiding something when she cuts their first kiss short by pointing out they come from different worlds.

The privileged world of the Carmichael clan stands in stark contrast to Maya's limited means. Ainsley's sexually fluid, quirky, and carefree cousin helps her investigate, only to discover details of Maya's past are sketchy at best as the suspense builds in this work of LGBT fiction.

Will Ainsley's love for the enigmatic girl enable her to break her Carmichael shackles?

The Chosen One by T.B. Markinson is an excellent story. Ainsley and Maya are two young women with a completely different background. Ainsley is from a very politically powerful family and her future has been mapped out from before she was born. Maya grew up in totally different circumstances. As the story unfolds a bond grows between Ainsley and Maya and their friendship evolves quickly into a beautiful romance. Bit by bit the secrets of both families are revealed. There is plenty of tension to keep you flipping pages, hoping for the best. Besides the romance, intrigue, and politics there is also room for humor in this book which makes me love it even more.

If you’ve never read a book by T.B. Markinson, this is a great place to start. If you’re already a fan, then this isn’t one to be missed.

The Chosen One T B Markinson 9781533590084 Books Reviews

I'm Jamaican and I know very little about American politics and their presidents. There were some political references and punch lines that were over my head. I just couldn't relate. However, I could relate to Ainsley every step of the way. Her awkwardness, her ambition, her sense of obligation to maintain her family's legacy. And Maya the Gray. I was slightly disappointed that she was also a virgin. The buildup to her and Ainsley having sex for the first time portrayed Maya as experienced, but I guess that was just in terms of work. I loved the nicknames scattered throughout although at one point it bordered on overuse. Overall, I enjoyed it.
Going in, I didn't know what to expect as I haven't read any books by this author. I was pleasantly surprised. I couldn't imagine the life Ainsley lives, where any all decisions concerning her life, is dependent on the outcome of polling.

In the beginning Ainsley, The Chosen One, is all about towing the line and doing what is expected of her with no regard to her own happiness. The moment Miss Maya walks in changes Ainsley's life. Maya has secrets but that just draws Ainsley in. I loved seeing Ainsley become the strong woman she was meant to be, making her own decisions and protecting those she cherishes. I am hoping there is a sequel because I would really love to delve deeper into Maya's story about her father.

Great series!
Enjoyable storytelling with a nice background aspect of both leading ladies because the storyline even venture in showing that certain lesbians can reveal a side of beauty which can come also appear in any form whether someone is rich or poor -- so others should not judge while reading as in today's society and social media have done many times over and over again to someone's preference (bullying). Huge of the author for writing and taking on this storyline and for having these characters not be your typical blonde, blue eyed, tall, slim, auburn hair and green eyes leads --they were just your regular looking two leading ladies (1 of mix-race-Puerto Rican +) along with the sometimes support of their chaotic families and few issues & problem to go with their love story because it also had it's moment of both fluff and sweetness to the end. A highly recommended series to everyone!
I liked this book, but I'll be honest, I stopped at 80% and still have a couple of chapters left.

Liked
- The main character and her love interest are well rounded and have interesting personalities that you can love and relate to.
- The supporting characters contributed a significant impact on the plot. I love the cousin for her humor and evident commitment issues.
- There's a lot of historical and political references that make me almost desperate to take a tour of of this beautifully described city.

Dislike
- I think it's a little unrealistic how the main character is treated like a celebrity. I can definitely understand it to an extent, but this character and her family made it seem like they were living under the scrutiny of 18th century British gossip.
- There wasn't any particular aspect that held my attention. This is actually the reason I stopped reading. I had to put the book down because life got in the way, and for some reason I just never felt the interest in continuing.

My dislikes sound pretty extreme, however in context, they're actually very tiny details in an otherwise highly enjoyable book! Some readers might think that there's justification for the paranoia of public appearances, and I can easily see how fans of romance would find this book invigorating for its fresh take and lovable characters. The book isn't boring or slow, so when I say I wasn't intrigued, keep in mind that it's more of a personal lack of interest rather than any reflection of poor writing. Despite my dislike, it's a cute romance that is worthy of 4 stars.
"The Chosen One" by T. B. Markinson is an unusual offering in the LGBT romance genre. Ainsley Carmichael is a 19-year-old political science major who has been "chosen" by her powerful grandmother to be groomed for the Presidency of the US. The narration is set in the "near present", since all recent Commanders-in-Chief up to Obama are mentioned, but the presidential candidates of the current 2016 election aren't cited.

The plot is rife with political intrigue, and leans heavily on a "tattle-tale blog" by Susie Q, whose mother is a political rival of Ainsley's senator mother, to provide threat and dramatic tension. In her Massachusetts History class, Ainsley meets and falls in love with a gorgeous bi-racial woman, Maya Chandler, who has a mysterious past. The fact that Ainsley is lesbian is not a problem to her family's political aspirations, but her choice of lover most definitely IS.

Besides Ainsley and Maya, who are thoroughly sympathetic characters, there are a number of other extremely well-drawn members of the "cast", including Ainsley's cousin Fiona, the latter's doctor boyfriend Patrick, and Maya's mother Agnes. The narrative and dialog is lively and often amusing, and the story is extremely timely. Well worth a read.
