All About India This Is India Book 2 eBook Dr Johnson C Philip Dr Saneesh Cherian

The book is well written and a good overview of India, but like some of the other reviewers, I thought that it fell short in a number of areas. I've been to India three times and like many Western visitors, I developed a 'love-hate' relationship with the country - although the relationship is more about love than hate. Most travellers to India are lured to the country's fantastic monuments, breath taking landscape and pathways to spirituality. We are fascinated with India's ancient and multifaceted culture as well as charmed by India's hospitality. However, travelling in India is hard going and can test even the most seasoned traveller to their limits. Why is this? Why is travelling in India so challenging? Can the authors shed any light on this phenomenon? While the book portrays the country in a positive light, widespread problems such as poverty, pollution and over population are not examined. The title "This is India" suggests that the book would give some insight into why things happen in India the way that they do and why things are the way they are - but I think the book fails to do this. Maybe it is just the title that's a misnomer.

A very enjoyable read. Some very interesting fact s .about the
country. Not enough about your culture and friendly nature and the best region to visit.
Gives you a basic understanding of India and its varies cultures.
This booklet covered a wide range of topics with great clarity. The history is most helpful to unerstand the many differences. I would have liked more info on the food. Over all the amount of info is amazing; but written so well that it is easy to read and understand.
I enjoyed learning about India with this book. What was most enlightening was the sections on government and demographics, as well as the ancient history of India.
Having Lived in India for many years I thought I would look for a nice little book that I could send friends and family. While this one has some nice photographs courtesy of wikimedia, according to the copyright page, they are small and a bit blah.

As this volume was a general introduction, I was not expecting a detailed history, but it would have been nice to have more human stories during the history section. It seemed more like a list of eras than a grand history.

Statements such as this without any example leave the reader left hanging.

"The assimilation has in turn produced many regional variations i.e., what's common at one place is rare at the other, and what is accepted at one place is forbidden in another."

The descriptions of the festivals and holidays were lackluster and lacked any fun details. Nor were there any photographs to show the types of celebrations that do happen. i.e. no Republic Day Parade Photo, Holi, or Rakhi.

The description of Indian food was disappointing as Indian food has a wide variety and is influenced by so many things. In the south coconut is heavily used. In the north mustard oil, seeds and leaves can be found. Coastal areas have much more fish than inland areas.

Overall I found this "General Knowledge Book", to be lacking in specifics, lacking in illustrations and lacking in excitement. This book would not entice me to read more.

If you just need to read general facts this book is fine. However, if you wish to be enticed this is a bit sterile for my liking.

ETA it was brought to my attention that there are other accepted spellings of Diwali, I can say that I have seen Deepawali, however, I have never seen Deevali. In the north where I live the usual spelling is Diwali. Although I have normally seen mugal spelled Mughal or mogul, I have in good conscience removed a comment about spelling as Diwali and Mughal are the only ones that irked me. I have also changed my recommendation as I do not feel this is a bad book, I just feel that it is lacking the excitement that is India.
This book attempts to give the reader a quick overview of this exceptional country. For that reason, I could understand the rush through history. The photos are great and plentiful.

I was surprised that the foods of India were glossed over so quickly. I would love to know the approximate cost of the Taj Majal in today's money (I'll bet it is staggering).

I enjoyed the book, though I thought it promised more than it gave; after all the title is -- ALL ABOUT INDIA.
I have had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman from India. Not knowing much about his culture this book came in handy. Its short and sweet on the history of India which is rich with age, as well as giving back ground information on food's, festivals, places of interest. I've highlighted as few areas of interest so that I may be able to get my friend to elaborate more on the areas. Thank you for bring some informative information to us Americans who know little to nothing of India's country. This little book as given me a whole new respect not only for my new friend but for his beloved country as well.
